Hair loss in women: the advice of the specialist doctor

The interview of Dr. Pascal Reygagne, dermatologist and director of the Sabouraud center specialized in skin and hair, at the St-Louis hospital in Paris.

Facing an abnormal hair loss, who should we consult in priority?

Faced with an abnormal and prolonged fall of the hair, it is necessary to consult a dermatologist who is the specialist of the skin but also of the scalp and the hair. Flee the "pseudo-scientific" institutes, without doctors, who will sell you ineffective care and products at exorbitant prices.

In case of androgenic alopecia, apart from minoxil, what can the doctor prescribe as drugs or hormonal treatments?

  • Propecia® in humans;
  • Adequate contraception or anti-male hormone treatment (cyproterone acetate) in women, but only if the periods are irregular or in case of hyperpilosity, acne or oily hair.

In addition, this treatment must be combined with a traditional pill or female hormones. In all cases, these treatments are on medical prescription only.

How is the application of hair implants done?

This procedure is not painful and is performed under local anesthesia. It is practiced by dermatologists or plastic surgeons. In contrast, the placement of hair implants is not reimbursed by the Health Insurance.
