This gland is part of the male reproductive system. It produces one of the components of the sperm. The prostate can unfortunately be affected by various diseases, such as inflammation or a tumor.

What is the prostate?

It is one of the components of the male reproductive system. The prostate is under the bladder and in front of the rectum. It is crossed by the canal of the urethra which serves as evacuation conduit to the urine.

Classically, the prostate is about the size of a chestnut or a plum in young men. With age the volume of the prostate increases slightly.

We can distinguish two parts of the prostate: central and peripheral. The normal prostate weighs about 15 to 20 grams.

What is it for ?

The main role of the prostate is to produce a fluid that is one of the components of the sperm by mixing with sperm from the testes. Note that two small glands (seminal vesicles) are contiguous to the prostate. The seminal fluid of the sperm is thus secreted at this level.

The prostate can be a victim of various conditions, including:

  • Benign prostatic hypertrophy
  • Prostatitis
  • Prostate cancer

The specialist doctor who deals with prostate diseases is a urologist (urinary tract specialist).
